R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass dies at 59


The survivor of a 1982 car accident, Pendergrass was paralyzed from the waist down but continued his career, which began with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. As a solo artist he recorded many classics records and was dubbed "Teddy Bear" for his velvety smooth voice. Eight months ago, he underwent surgery for colon cancer and was said have had a difficult recovery, according to his son Teddy Jr. He leaves behind a musical legacy that will fondly be remembered.

He died Jan. 13, at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia.
